  1. I recently read the comment about the Buena Vista Hotel when researching the damage Sandy did to Belmar. I hope the hotel survived.
My memories go back to the late 1940s when my family vacationed for a month each summer at Mrs. Rhodes’ boardinghouse next to the Buena Vista. My mother, sister and I spent the entire month while my father commuted on weekends. The boarding house had a large kitchen area divided into cubicles and each family had a cubicle with stove and ice box. Every day the iceman delivered a block of ice.
The “wealthy” vacationers stayed at the Buena Vista. Once a week the Buena Vista showed silent cartoons but only for residents. No neighbor kids allowed.
