Stunt to Benefit the Wounded Warrior Project
Beginning March 24, 2015, Six Flags Safari Warden Mike Miller will attempt to break the world record for longest karaoke marathon. Miller plans to step into the spotlight at noon, and keep belting his favorite tunes for more than four straight days to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.
The Jackson native has been an avid karaoke singer for seven years, stealing the spotlight on a weekly basis. Known to fans as “Miller” and “Wild Mike” on stage, the 25-year-old began planning his aggressive world record attempt in July 2014.
“My dad is a veteran, and I have many friends currently serving in our armed forces. I feel very passionate about this charity, and want to help bring awareness and generate donations for the great work they do while doing something I love,” Miller said.
Singing marathon-style for more than four days presents an array of logistical and medical challenges. “I’ve consulted a doctor, and some of the obstacles I face are sleep deprivation, delirium, losing my voice and other medical risks caused by exhaustion. It will take me two to four weeks to physically recover from this challenge,” Miller said.
Because of the risk involved, Miller is assembling a team of safety professionals, and will need an additional 150 volunteers to help log and video tape his attempt for the Guinness record, which is taking place at McGinn’s Pub in Jackson Township. Many of his Six Flags coworkers have already pledged their support.
“There are so many rules involved and variables to anticipate. I’ve been training for this for quite a while, but I can’t do it alone. I’m grateful for the help I’ve received so far, and asking for the community’s support to help me positively impact the Wounded Warrior Project and finally break the world record,” Miller said.
This isn’t Miller’s first attempt. In 2008, Miller surpassed the Guinness record while raising funds for the Prostate Cancer Research Fund. But by the time all of the other karaoke marathon submissions had been reviewed, Miller lost the record to another singer.
“My goal is 104 hours. It will break the current record by approximately three hours,” he said. Miller is preparing approximately 175 songs that he will repeat every ten hours. Country songs are his favorites – singers like Luke Bryan, Toby Keith, Zack Brown Band and Kenny Chesney. “But you’ll also hear some Def Leppard, Goo Goo Dolls and Journey, too,” he said.
According to Miller, “I’ve had two dreams in life – to work with animals, and to break a world record. I work with some of the most amazing animals in the world at Six Flags, so now it’s time to achieve my second dream.”
Miller wants to raise at least $5,000 for Wounded Warrior Project. Donations and volunteers will be accepted on the Wounded Warrior website, at support.woundedwarriorproject.org/individual-fundraising/karaokerecord/ Fans can connect with Miller on Twitter at @KaraokeRecAttmp and find out more on his Facebook page, www.facebook.com/karaokerecordattempt
